Hispaniola was discovered by Columbus in 1493, who claimed it for Spain. In 1659 Spain ceded the western part of the island to France (Saint Domingue, today's Haiti). In 1821 Santo Domingo (the Spanish part of Hispaniola) declared independence; in 1822 it was conquered by Haiti. In 1844 independence from Haiti was proclaimed. In 1861 Santo Domingo accepted colonial status under Spain. In 1865 independence was declared, as the Dominican Republic.
